Creative SEO Tip: Newsjacking - Search Engine Watch (#SEW)

newsjacking

Google is growing market share and vowing to implement more changes aimed at reducing web spam and manipulative linking. But to the average small business owner these constant changes are mystifying or even maddening. To small businesses, Google seems to be sending a consistent message: Link building, in all forms, is manipulative and bad.

But this can?t be true. We know that Google?s algorithm runs on links at the core. How can there be such a disparity between what everyone knows to be true and the message Google sends to marketers?

First Reaction: Give Up on SEO

In the face of continuing Google updates and a desire to stay ?clean,? most marketers flirt with the idea of giving up on SEO entirely and turn to PPC. PPC should be in the marketing portfolio already, as it is an excellent complement to search engine optimization.

PPC should be used for testing new keyword spaces, end-user reactions to copy, time-on-site and conversion behaviors. It is the right tool because it brings traffic quickly. But long term, PPC is expensive and estimating PPC ROI is difficult.

The next target is social media. Social media has serious media hype behind it, leading many to believe it is a viable alternative to SEO.

While social media is critical for public relations, customer service and reputation management, data strongly suggests that social media is not a great source of first-time visitors?(i.e., leads) for small businesses. Like PPC, social media is an important part of a diversified marketing strategy. And it is vital for content marketing. But it is not a silver bullet.

Second Reaction: Do SEO Faster (and More Poorly)

Faced with the realization that SEO has the strongest ROI, small business marketers often come to the conclusion that they just need to do SEO faster. Sadly, this usually means cutting corners and doing SEO more poorly.

Thin content is not a viable onsite SEO strategy. Furthermore, thin content placed in low-authority article directories does not bring strong results. Guest blog posts can be very beneficial, but not on unrelated websites. In short, link manipulation techniques that may have worked 4 years ago are now detrimental.

Avoid bad link building techniques, as Google has gotten much stronger as spotting link manipulation attempts and schemes. Don?t use spammy blog networks or buy links from shady websites. Don?t make articles without co-citation and then spin them. This is not helpful to the end-user and leaves a bad footprint in the link graph.

Final Reaction: SEO Requires Effort, Purpose and Creativity

After the dust settles (or a webmaster receives a penalty), the smart marketer starts viewing the costs associated with good SEO as a wise investment. At this point, they start to think creatively about SEO and explore the full potential of inbound marketing. They invest in building relationships while they are building links, which to the uninitiated may not even make sense. Relationships breed accountability whereas anonymity does not.

After drinking the SEO Kool-Aid, marketers recognize that their link building should be in the form of content that has real purpose and value?to the end-reader.

In short, they transform from link building SEO professionals to content marketers. They start writing for a real audience, caring about facts and statistics. The presentation of content is upgraded with relevant images and is never reused. Content is syndicated to higher-value websites now that it takes longer to procure. The end-result is stronger for end-users, and marketers invariably start to look for more creative ways to syndicate content with the hopes of something going viral.

Creative SEO Tip: Newsjacking

Newsjacking is a newer idea in SEO, but a natural extension of content marketing. While it sounds like a negative term, it is not. Newsjacking is a technique in which marketers ride existing demand associated with breaking news for exposure. In other words, smart marketers know there is extremely high demand for breaking news stories and use this to their advantage by contributing to the overall discussion.

What is newsjacking?

  • Paying attention to breaking news
  • Understanding the keywords being searched for in a particular news cycle
  • Producing high-quality, well-researched content that serves a specific demand for information
  • Syndicating content very quickly to be found when other news organizations search for sources.

Small businesses can?t newsjack any story, it has to be related to their space. But most businesses won?t have difficulty finding breaking news that somehow relates to their business.

For example, a high profile fire in a historic building could be used by a construction company to highlight the importance of local code and inspections. A bank robbery could be used by a home security company to discuss the merits of a reliable security system. In both cases, working in a natural sentence that highlights the company?s position will not be difficult.

Newsjacking is similar to content marketing in that the content comes first and the marketing second. Serve the reader?s desire for news, facts and opinion ? but use that opportunity for a branded mention and a link (yes, it is still OK to get a link when you work for it). Finally, use social media for quick dissemination and viral spread. Recognize that unlike content marketing, newsjacking is fleeting and timing is critical.

Conclusions

Regardless of the debate on Google?s effectiveness today, all agree that Google will continue to make updates to its algorithm to spot unnatural link manipulation. Smart marketers understand this trend, but don?t want to give up on SEO due to the ROI.

After exhausting PPC and social media, SEO professionals turn to high-quality, creative techniques to contribute valuable content while gaining exposure and links. Content Marketing is a well-established technique.

Newsjacking, a type of content marketing, places the emphasis on breaking news events rather than how-tos or technical Information and rides the wave of existing demand for news information to get well-earned backlinks and branded mentions.

Fisker puts US workers on furlough to conserve cash

Fisker's cash reserves have been in trouble ever since its Department of Energy loans were frozen, and now its putting its US workforce on furlough to keep money in the bank while it searches for a partner with deep pockets. "This is a common practice, particularly in the automotive industry, to manage costs and operations based on current activity levels and commercial requirements," said Fisker, which has over 200 employees in America, in a statement concerning the unpaid leave. Considering that battery woes and other mishaps have contributed to keeping assembly lines quiet, current activity levels are indeed low. Reuters says the automaker hasn't built a car since July, and it's coming up against a federal loan payment in late April. According to the outlet, Fisker was aiming to partner with Chinese auto companies that could bolster its finances, but talks are said to have crawled to a stop. Regardless, the firm is still on the lookout for an investor to fuel the production of its Atlantic hybrid.

Bombs at five Iraqi Shi'ite mosques kill 19

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Car bombs hit five Shi'ite mosques in Baghdad and the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk just after prayers on Friday, killing 19 worshippers and injuring another 130.

Ten years after the U.S. invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, Iraq is still grappling with political turmoil and Sunni Islamist insurgents linked to al Qaeda, who are stepping up attacks on Shi'ite targets and security forces.

Friday's blasts hit Shi'ite mosques in southeast and north Baghdad while another tore the front off a mosque in Kirkuk, an ethnically mixed city of Arabs, Kurds and Turkman 170 km (100 miles) north of the capital.

"We were listening to the cleric's speech when we heard a very strong explosion. Glass scattered everywhere and the roof partially collapsed," said Mohammed, a victim wounded in the Kirkuk blast, his shirt still covered in blood.

Police and health officials said the attacks in Baghdad killed 16. Three more died in Kirkuk, where the blast left a jumble of concrete wreckage in the mosque and on the street outside.

Attacks in Iraq are still less common than during the Sunni-Shi'ite slaughter that erupted at the height of the last war, when insurgents bombed the Shi'ite al-Askari shrine in Samarra in 2006, provoking a wave of retaliation by Shi'ite militias.

Al Qaeda's local wing, Islamic State of Iraq, has vowed to keep up attacks and security officials say insurgents are regrouping in the deserts of western Iraq, invigorated by the war Sunni rebels are waging in Syria over the border.

Al Qaeda in Iraq claimed responsibility for a wave of bombings and suicide attacks earlier this month that killed around 60 people on the 10th anniversary of the U.S. invasion.

Sunni Islamists see Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's Shi'ite-led government as oppressors of the country's Sunni minority and are targeting Shi'ites to try to trigger the kind of inter-communal mayhem that killed thousands in 2006-7.

Washington has tied the militant al-Nusra Front fighting in Syria to al Qaeda's Iraqi branch and has designated the group as a foreign terrorist organization.

Iraq's government says it takes no sides in the Syrian war but its interests are often aligned with those of Shi'ite Iran. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday pressed Maliki to stop Iranian flights taking arms over Iraqi airspace to Syria.

Learning to Let Go (for the Health of Your Company) | MSPmentor

I?m a control freak. But I?m trying to break the habit. The latest example: I?m no longer running the underlying IT platforms that drive MSPmentor?s two sister sites: The VAR Guy and Talkin? Cloud. Soon, I will let go of MSPmentor?s underlying technology as well. What does this journey mean? Before you jump to conclusions, here are some important lessons for MSP entrepreneurs who are growing their businesses, considering potential M&A strategies, and struggling to delegate daily tasks.

First, some background: I?ve been an accidental CIO for about five years now. When we launched Nine Lives Media (MSPmentor?s parent) in January 2008, I had some basic IT skills and some hunches about how online media would evolve. Similarly, co-founder Amy Katz had some great business development and sales experience to help her build financial models for our business. Amy quickly took on the CEO role and I took on the editorial director role ? but there was that sort-of CIO responsibility that came along with it.

Fortunately, we had a great web design and architecture partner. And we found the right platforms (WordPress, MySQL, Rackspace, etc.) for the start of our IT journey. But somewhere around year three of our our business (2010-2011), I knew I would eventually need to hand off my technical responsibilities. As the old saying goes: Hire the best person for the job. And when it comes to CIO-type functions, I was good for a Stage 1 company. That?s it.

Stage 2 and Beyond

Enter Penton Media. I think Amy and the Penton management team started talking M&A around Q2 of 2011. Amy always kept me looped in on the discussions. But ultimately she negotiated the deal. Among the big potential perks I hoped to achieve: Instead of trying to build a robust, scalable content management platform of our own, I hoped Penton would acquire us so that Nine Lives could ultimately run our web sites and media operations atop Penton?s web platform.

In other words: If you want to transform your house into a mansion it?s smart to plug into the existing city infrastructure rather than building your own power plant. That became a central part of the plan when Penton acquired Nine Lives Media in August 2011. But the complete IT transition wouldn?t happen overnight.

Our first step was migrating all the basic business operations ? email, finance, accounting, payroll, etc. ? to Penton?s systems. That occurred rapidly, and Amy made it all happen.

At the same time we watched how Penton began to standardize its own content management system on a single platform code-named PISCES. Look under the hood, and you?ll find that PISCES is built on Drupal, an open source CMS. One by one, Penton was moving its various media brands onto Drupal. We knew Nine Lives Media had to chart a similar course.

But there were plenty of inflection points. We had to get our editorial team trained on Drupal (special thanks to Charlene O?Hanlon for taking the lead on learning Drupal.) I think some peers at Penton wondered if I was ready to truly ?let go? of Nine Lives? content management system. We also had to sort out how our ad serving system would work on Penton?s IT infrastructure. Most of all: I wanted to see our sites running? ? even in a controlled environment ? on Penton?s PISCES platform before we pulled back the curtain on a very public migration.

Experts In the House

That?s where folks like Penton VP of Internet Technology Nino Tasca and Senior Project Manager Matt Tulloch enter the picture. Basically, PISCES is Tasca?s baby. And Tulloch is the migration expert who made sure The VAR Guy and Talkin? Cloud had safe passage to PISCES. Tulloch will repeat that feat sometime soon for MSPmentor (stay tuned).

Like any IT project, we encountered plenty of challenges amid our migration. But the bottom line is our sites and business continues to grow; I?m still blogging away; and Penton is now running two-thirds of our media platforms. The final one-third of the migration is within sight?

The Lesson for MSPs and Entrepreneurs

When you started your business, you likely did a little bit of everything because you had to. But as you consider potential business growth ? or maybe even an M&A deal ? down the road here?s what I?d do:

  • First, make a list of the key tasks you want/need to delegate over time.
  • Second, make a list of the skills that organic hiring or an M&A deal will bring to the table.

As an entrepreneur or business owner you need to do less ? not more. In some ways it?s fine to be a control freak. But when you?re no longer the smartest guy or gal in the room on a specific t0pic then its time to eat some humble pie, delegate fast and get back to what you love: The creative process of building a business, rather than the nuts and bolts of running a business.

As for me, I?m still doing what I love. But my job description no longer includes after-hours website support for The VAR Guy and Talkin? Cloud. That?s my opportunity to say goodnight.

CSoC: Two Missing Steps on Both Sides of PRTF | Louisiana ...

Never in Louisiana?s history has our state?s child welfare system been more highly regulated. Never has so much significant change occurred in such a compressed period of time than during the last 18 months.

I?ll summarize it like this: We now have federal regulations being interpreted by state regulations to create a coordinated system of behavioral health care from four state departments? funding mixed with federal funds which are being managed by a state-based subsidiary of a public corporation traded on Wall Street. (I think that?s correct.)

Louisiana?s Coordinated System of Care (CSoC) is one year old this month. Created by an Executive Order issued by Governor Jindal on March 3, 2011, CSoC became operational when Magellan of Louisiana began acting as the State Management Organization on March 1, 2012.

CSoC (pronounced ?sea sock?) is a managed behavioral health care system for Louisiana?s children who are in out-of-home placements or who are at risk of being placed out of their homes. Louisiana?s Coordinated System of Care (CSoC) is a cross-departmental project of the Office of Juvenile Justice, the Department of Children and Family Services, the Department of Health and Hospitals and the Department of Education to organize a coordinated network of broad, effective services for Louisiana?s at risk children and youth with significant behavioral health challenges or related disorder.

The cross-departmental nature of CSoC is chiefly related to funding. State General Fund dollars from each of the four state departments were pooled and used as a pot to pull down untapped Medicaid dollars at a ratio of 1:3. One state dollar brings down 3 additional Medicaid dollars.

Of course, anytime federal dollars are pulled into a state, those federal dollars have significant strings attached. When Louisiana converted to a federally-funded child welfare system, those federal strings required significant changes.

One imposed change was the creation of two new DHH-licensed levels of residential care: Treatment Group Homes (TGH) and Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities (PRTF). Mercer, a consulting firm which helped DHH design Louisiana?s CSoC, determined that Louisiana needs 340 PRTF beds and 250 PRTF beds.

Because each of our residential programs cares for more than 16 children, the Methodist Children?s Homes in Louisiana were required to become licensed as Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities. A PRTF license is not a hospital license. We continue operations as residential facilities with additional staff to provide for medical care and residential psychiatric care.

This is probably the best place to insert the chart I have created which demonstrates the levels of out-of-home care (Click the image for a larger view):

missing-steps-in-service-array-20130327

Notice the third step. That?s the PRTF step. Then notice that the second and fourth steps on either side are missing. There is no step for Longer Term Psychiatric Hospitalization. There is no step for Treatment Group Homes. This diagram describes the current status of the array of services available for children in Louisiana.

Let?s start with the Longer Term Psychiatric Hospitalization. To my knowledge, there are only a small number of these beds in Louisiana. 40 is the last official number I heard reported during a meeting in Baton Rouge in late 2010. I?ll assume the number of these beds today is still close enough to 40 to call it 40. I assume there are times when 40 beds are sufficient. There will also be times when 40 beds in the entire state are not enough for children who have longer term psychiatric hospitalization needs.

In terms of numbers, the most significant missing step is the absence of Treatment Group Homes. Louisiana reports it needs 340. There can be no more than 8 children in a single group home. Louisiana needs at least 42.5 treatment group homes spread across the state. Today, after a year of CSoC, there is only one Treatment Group Home. Parker House is the Volunteers of America?s TGH in Baton Rouge for boys under 13. (I commend the staff of VOA and Parker House for their work to license a Treatment Group Home. It was not an easy road.)

At Methodist we have reviewed the Treatment Group Home materials and we do not believe we can provide Treatment Group Home services. I?ll share some of the reasons we and others are unable to provide Treatment Group Home services.

1. Federal regulations dictate what a children?s home can do now that CSoC is at work. We have four houses on our Ruston campus that would make great Treatment Group Homes. However, because we have PRTF beds on the same property, all our beds on the property must be PRTF beds. Remember, because we have more than 16 children in care, we must be licensed as a Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility.

2. The TGH minimum licensing standards require a Treatment Group Home be located in a neighborhood. Finding a suitable, existing house which meets the licensing requirements will be like finding a needle in a haystack. Homes built for families will not serve as great Treatment Group Homes. For example, few families require 8 bedrooms. If a provider builds their own house with 8 bedrooms it will be nearly impossible to sell in the future because, again, few families require 8 bedrooms.

3. I wrote earlier that it was initially reported that CSoC would bring $3 federal dollars into Louisiana for each $1 of State General Funds Louisiana tossed into the common pot. That?s a significant amount! I don?t believe it has worked out that way, though. Reimbursement rates for services are now lower than the cost of providing the service. The per diem payment for Non-Medical Group Homes is less than the rate providers received before CSoC was created. Several providers have crashed into their financial wall this past year because the current reimbursement rates do not support the costs of care. The Treatment Group Home reimbursement rate is low.

4. There are adolescent group home providers in Louisiana who have the experience and the heart to become Treatment Group Home providers. Unfortunately, CSoC does not pay for the start-up costs of making the transition from the former DCFS Child Residential license to the new DHH Treatment Group Home license. The cost of additional staff who must be hired prior to receiving the TGH license, the cost of licenses for evidence-based treatment practices, and the cost of accreditation are all financial burdens group home providers must shoulder to become Treatment Group Homes. Unfortunately, the per diem reimbursement rate is too low to allow a provider to ever recoup the startup costs. Figuratively speaking, a new TGH provider will start out in a hole and never climb out.

I?ll stop there because this is growing a bit long.

Scroll up and click on the chart again. Louisiana?s children need access to the two missing steps on the staircase of services. It?s a big step down from care in a psychiatric residential treatment facility to care in a non-medical group home. Some children require longer term psychiatric hospitalization because of significant mental illness.

CSoC still has important gaps to fill ? the sooner the better.

DFG approves new funding program for research data infrastructures

This release is available in German.

As in other areas, science and research are generating digital data faster and in larger volumes than ever before. The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) wants to help researchers in every discipline, from Assyriology to Zoology, to use data more effectively. The Joint Committee of Germany's largest research funding organisation has decided to launch a new funding programme. Its purpose is ensure that quality-assured research data, which is frequently collected at great financial expense in a time-consuming process, is secured on a more permanent basis and made available for re-use by researchers at a later date.

According to current estimates, the global sea of data generated by our digital world doubles in size every two years. In Germany and in the rest of the world, this is giving rise to the question of how these huge flows of data in general, and research data in particular, should be dealt with. Against this background, the Alliance of Science Organisations in Germany formulated the "Principles for the Handling of Research Data" (2010), EU experts presented the paper "Riding the Wave" (2010) and the DFG approved the paper "Taking Digital Transformation to the Next Level" (2012). Furthermore, the German Council of Science and Humanities approved analyses and recommendations to develop information infrastructures in Germany (2012). In the view of all the organisations involved, a new way to manage research data should be given priority.

The new funding programme is the DFG's practical response to discussions and recommendations. The objective of the new funding offered by the DFG is to institute and maintain helpful structures for research data that are oriented towards the demand and requirements of science. The programme will fund projects to develop sustainable concepts and solutions ranging from transregional data infrastructures for one or more disciplines to enhancements to existing infrastructure, taking account of international standards and cross-border cooperation.

With the new funding line, the DFG is hoping that more disciplines will establish a structure that can be seen to encourage innovation. A crucial factor here is a change of awareness towards recognising the significance of quality-assured data management that will take steps towards the re-use of research data. The new funding programme is intended to make a contribution in this respect.

Google Translate on Android gains offline support for thrifty travelers

Travelers face a dilemma: they'll often leave a phone in airplane mode to avoid expensive roaming rates or a foreign SIM, but staying offline can break the translation services that might prove vital in a strange land. Google must have heard their plight, as a new version of Google Translate on Android adds the option to download offline packs for 50 different languages. They aren't as full-featured as their cloud-based equivalents, although there's good reason for the trimmed dictionaries -- at least some packs are over 150MB each. Unless space is just too tight, however, anyone with at least Android 2.3 can ask dónde el baño es without risking some bill shock.

Canon Pixma PRO-100

The Canon Pixma PRO-100 may be the new junior model in Canon's professional photo inkjet line, but as such it can still output gallery-quality prints at sizes up to 13 by 19 inches. It's a good choice for an amateur photographer who's looking to take the hobby more seriously.

At 8.6 by 27.2 by 15.2 inches (HWD) when closed, it's slightly larger than its Epson counterpart, the Editors' Choice Epson Stylus Photo R2000, and about the same weight. Like the R2000, it lacks an LCD; instructions and data like ink tank levels are displayed on the screen of the computer you're printing from. It offers WiFi and Ethernet as well as USB connectivity.

The PRO-100 uses eight ink tanks for its dye-based inks: black; gray; light gray; yellow; magenta; photo magenta; cyan; and photo cyan. The high-end model in the series, the Canon Pixma PRO-1, sports 12 ink tanks. Although the PRO-100's sticker price is much less than that of the PRO-1, its ink costs?at least in price per milliliter of ink, as there's no good way to measure the cost per printed page for this sort of printer?are considerably higher. Each of its tanks holds 13 ml of ink, at a cost of $1.31 per ml, compared with an even dollar per ml for the PRO-1, which has much higher capacity (36 ml) tanks. The PRO-100's ink costs per ml are also slightly higher than the $1.25 per ml of the Editors' Choice Epson Stylus Photo R2000.

The PIXMA PRO-100 has two paper trays: A rear tray for a variety of fine art and glossy photo papers, and a manual slot for thicker media. It also permits printing onto printable CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs.

Canon Pixma PRO-100

Speed
Speed takes a back seat to quality with near-dedicated photo printers, but faster is still preferable, all else being equal. I timed the Canon Pixma PRO-100 (using QualityLogic's hardware and software) at an average of 1 minute 17 seconds to output a 4-by-6 print and 2:01 to output an 8-by-10. This is slightly slower than the 51 seconds per 4-by-6 and 1:42 per 8-by-10 for the Epson R2000, but much faster than the Canon Pixma PRO-1's 2:14 and 3:53 times.

Output Quality
No one buys a photo printer like the PRO-100 to print text, but it's good to know it can do so if you need it to, as it has above-average quality for an inkjet. It did especially well on several of the more common business fonts. Graphics quality was slightly above par for an inkjet, though colors were off on a couple of illustrations.

It's with photos, though, that the PRO-100 really shines. In our standard photo tests, it did very well in capturing detail in both light and dark areas, and in faces. There was the barest hint of a tint in a monochrome image, but only a perfectionist is likely to notice. I also did some ad-hoc testing, including with larger-format (13 by 19 inches) prints. It didn't do quite as well as the PRO-1 in printing images with very dark backgrounds, which isn't surprising as five of that printer's 12 ink tanks are various shades of black or gray. In a couple of prints, the colors were slightly off. Still, the overall photo quality is good enough to produce prints for exhibition or sale.

The Canon Pixma PRO-1 costs twice as much as the PRO-100 and is bigger, heavier, and slower, but has considerably lower ink costs. The PRO-1 did a superior job of printing photos with black or very dark backgrounds, and did slightly better in printing other photos as well.

The Epson Stylus Photo R3000 ($849.99 direct), which prints top-tier photos and graphics, adds a color LCD and the ability to print from paper rolls.

The Epson R2000 is a touch smaller than the PRO-100 and has a slight edge in speed, as well as slightly lower ink costs (per volume at least). That said, they both produce gallery-worthy prints, and choosing between them may come down to whether you prefer the look of Epson or Canon prints, which have slightly different qualities. They both offer WiFi, Ethernet, and USB connectivity.

Cosmic crash 2022: Space probes will smash into asteroid in nine years

Cosmic crash 2022: American and European scientists are planning to crash a spacecraft into a nearby asteroid in 2022 to analyze the interior of the cosmic rock.

By Miriam Kramer,?Space.com / March 25, 2013

This NASA simulation shows asteroid 2012 DA14 approaching Earth from the south on Feb. 15, 2013, when the 150-foot asteroid passed within 17,000 miles of the Earth. In 2022, scientists hope to crash a space probe into asteroid Didymos in order to understand its composition.

The ambitious European-led Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment mission, or AIDA, is slated to launch in 2019 to send two spacecraft ? one built by scientists in the U.S, and the other by the European Space Agency ? on a three-year voyage to the asteroid Didymos and its companion. Didymos has no chance of impacting the Earth, which makes it a great target for this kind of mission, scientists involved in the mission said in a presentation Tuesday (March 19) here at the 44th annual Lunar and Planetary Science Conference.

Didymos is actually a binary asteroid system consisting of two separate space rocks bound together by gravity. The main asteroid is enormous, measuring 2,625 feet (800 meters) across. It is orbited by a smaller asteroid ?about 490 feet (150 m).

The Didymos asteroid setup is an intriguing target for the AIDA mission because it will give scientists their first close look at a binary space rock system while also yielding new insights into ways to deflect dangerous asteroids that could pose an impact threat to the Earth.?

"Binary systems are quite common," said Andy Rivkin, a scientist at Johns Hopkins' Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md., working on the U.S. portion of AIDA project. "This will be our first rendezvous with a binary system."

In 2022, the Didymos asteroids will be about 6.8 million miles (11 million km) from the Earth, during a close approach, which is why AIDA scientists have timed their mission for that year.

Rivkin and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins' Applied Physics Laboratory are building DART (short for Double Asteroid Redirection Test), one of the two spacecraft making up the tag team AIDA mission. Like its acronym suggests, the DART probe crash directly into the smaller Didymos asteroid while travelling at 14,000 mph (22,530 km/h), creating a crater during an impact that will hopefully sending the space rock slightly off course, Rivkin said.

The European Space Agency is building the second AIDA spacecraft, which is called the Asteroid Impact Monitor (or AIM). AIM will observe the impact from a safe distance, and the probe's data will be used with other data collected by telescopes on Earth to understand exactly what the impact did to the asteroid.

"AIM is the usual shoebox satellite," ESA researcher Jens Biele, ?who works on the AIM spacecraft, said. "It's nothing very fancy."

AIDA scientists hope their mission will push the smaller Didymos asteroid off course by only a few millimeters. The small space rock orbits the larger, primary Didymos asteroid once every 12 hours.

Rated the top treadmill on the market by Health Magazine, the LifeSpan TR4000i folding treadmill is durable, stable, and loaded with valuable features, helping it accommodate serious runners and their training routines. The treadmill is equipped with a 1-inch reversible, commercial-grade deck and aluminum side rails, which combine long-lasting durability with the strength and toughness required by serious home users or light commercial settings. The spacious running surface, meanwhile, measures 20 inches wide by 60 inches long, with a coarse-textured, 2.8mm thick orthopedic belt that provides support, cushioning, and excellent running traction. And to help you track your workout progress, the treadmill automatically saves your exercise data. Once the info is saved, you can upload it to your personal online LifeSpan Fitness Club account, giving you access to exercise programs and detailed reports of your exercise and health results.

The multicolored LCD console tracks your time, distance, calories, and more. The centerpiece of the TR4000i, however, is the multicolored LCD console, which offers several simultaneous readouts and exercise programs to help you achieve your health and fitness goals. The display tracks your time, calories, distance, steps, heart rate, speed, and incline level, with large soft-touch keys helping you get started and control your momentum. More importantly, the console offers a variety of preset workout programs that help you vary your exercise routine--a critical factor for people trying to get in shape. Many of the workout programs on the TR4000i are grouped by exercise motivation, so you can quickly choose a workout that's right for you. The program categories include weight loss (choose from steady pace, long slow distance, cardio run, short interval, or uphill walk); healthy living (with uphill climb, pyramid climb, plateau climb, ladder, and uphill interval options); and sports training (with seven programs designed to help you train for an upcoming sporting event).

In addition to the preset programs, the treadmill offers two My Zone heart rate control programs and two custom programs. The My Zone Constant program keeps your heart rate at a constant level--thereby using your heart rate as a fitness tool--while the My Zone Interval program lets you enter your own minimum and maximum hear rate. As you exercise, the treadmill speed and incline will automatically adjust to keep your heart rate at the preferred level. By contrast, the custom programs are fully adaptable to your favored workout formula. That's because you're in charge of setting the speed and incline level for each of the 20 program segments, and then saving them for future use.

Pursuit of hackers who took credit reports expands

(AP) ? The pursuit of hackers who audaciously stole and published credit reports for Michelle Obama, the attorney general, FBI director and other U.S. politicians and celebrities crisscrossed continents and included a San Francisco-based Internet company, Cloudflare, The Associated Press has learned.

The sensational crime caught the attention of Congress and President Barack Obama, who said "we should not be surprised."

Obama said he could not confirm that the first lady's credit report was published earlier this week on a Russian website, along with what appeared to be the credit reports of nearly two dozen others, including Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, Donald Trump and celebrities Britney Spears, Jay Z, Beyonce and Tiger Woods.

If accurate as widely suspected, the leaked records put each victim at significant risk of identity theft. Included in the reports are Social Security numbers, dates of birth and a list of previous home addresses. The records also include such personal information as the first lady's monthly payments on a student loan 10 years ago and that she once held a Banana Republic credit card.

The president said determined hackers are a persistent threat.

"We should not be surprised that if you've got hackers who want to dig in and devote a lot of resources, that they can access people's private information," Obama told ABC News in an interview aired Wednesday. "It is a big problem."

Obama added: "It would not shock me if some information among people who presumably have pretty good safeguards against it, still gets out. That's part of the reason why we've got to continually improve what we do and coordinate between public and private sectors to make sure that people's information is safe."

On Capitol Hill, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee cited the breach Wednesday at a congressional hearing about the government prosecuting hackers. Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., said the leaks of financial information was "just the beginning of the problem" when it comes to the vulnerability of U.S. computer networks. Goodlatte said the U.S. has billions of dollars at stake, as foreign hackers try to steal sensitive information from businesses.

"The truth is that all citizens are vulnerable to these kinds of cyberattacks," Goodlatte said.

A spokesman for one of the largest U.S. credit bureaus, Tim Klein of Equifax, said an initial investigation showed that hackers used a website designed to give consumers a free credit report. The hackers apparently used personal details about their victims to impersonate them and generate the credit reports.

Representatives for Experian, Equifax and TransUnion have all said they were cooperating with the U.S. criminal investigation being conducted by the FBI and Secret Service.

A retired FBI executive assistant director, Shawn Henry, said he hopes the incident sheds light on the scope of the cybersecurity problem and identity theft in particular, which affects millions of Americans who aren't famous enough to make headlines.

"There's a lot of sensitive data available online," said Henry, the president of CrowdStrike, a security technology company. "People aren't keeping information in a safe locked behind closed doors. Information being breached and violated is happening every day."

In San Francisco, Cloudflare operates the directory computers, known as name servers, used behind the scenes to send visitors to the Russian website where the stolen credit reports were being published, according to Internet registration records. Without that service, few Internet users would be able to visit the Russian website or view the stolen credit reports.

A company spokeswoman, Carol Carrubba, told the AP that Cloudflare, which she described as a performance and security company, doesn't comment on its customers. But Carrubba said: "Even if we delete a customer's account, the content remains in place, though the site may load more slowly."

Internet directories on Wednesday continued to identify Cloudflare as directing traffic to the Russian website, although any technical changes could take hours or days to update across the Internet.

Last month, the chief executive at Cloudflare, Matthew Prince, said in a speech that he had been victimized last year by hackers associated with the group UGNazi. They tricked Google into giving them access to his Gmail account, Prince said, and left voicemails taunting him that they had bought his Social Security number from an underground Russian website. Prince said the break-in of his personal email account also allowed the hackers to take over Cloudflare's corporate email systems.

In his speech, Prince said his company traced the attackers within 24 hours, and the hackers turned out to be among Cloudflare's customers.

The FBI in San Francisco declined to tell AP whether investigators have contacted Cloudflare to review payments or communications that had been used to set up the service.

The website address uses an Internet suffix originally assigned to the former Soviet Union, and many of the pages feature unflattering pictures of the person featured and taunting messages to them. A counter on the website indicated that it had received more than 450,000 views since its existence was revealed on Monday.

Social Security numbers posted on Jay-Z, Mel Gibson and others matched records in public databases. Social Security numbers are not public records, although they are used to be included in some court filings. Many courts require the information be redacted from filings since the numbers can be used to steal a person's identity and open credit accounts in their name.

X Factor: 5 Stocks Reaching Their Ex-Dividend Date On March 19 ...

Many stocks will reach their ex-dividend date next Tuesday, which is significant for investors as the seller of the stock on that date, not the buyer, receives the most recent dividend.

A stock must be bought one day before the ex-dividend date to claim any dividends that have been announced but not yet paid. The company determines on the record date, which usually occurs two days after the ex-dividend date, which shareholders qualify for the dividend. Shareholders listed as holders of record after the record date then receive their dividend on the date of payment established by the company. Those purchasing right before the record date forfeit the dividend and normally get the stock for a reduced amount.

It may seem an anachronism in this era of high frequency trading, but the dividend rate rules are in force since it can still take up to three business days for transactions to be credited to and settled in an investor?s account.

Below are five stocks that schedule March 19 as their ex-dividend date. All annual yields are estimated.

Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) yields 3.39% annually and has a market cap of $6.79 billion. The consumer electronics retailer will pay a quarterly dividend of $0.17 on April 11, and its quarterly yield will be 0.85% based on yesterday?s closing price of $20.08. The company has paid a quarterly dividend since 2004.

Las Vegas Sands (NYSE:LVS) yields 2.65% annually and has a market cap of $43.51 billion. The operator of integrated resorts in Asia and the United States will pay a quarterly dividend of $0.35 on March 29, and its quarterly yield will be $0.66 based on yesterday?s closing price of $52.85. The company began paying a dividend last year. ?

Kinross Gold Corporation (NYSE:KGC) yields 2.06% annually and has a market cap of $8.85 billion. The gold miner will pay a semi-annual dividend of $0.08 on March 28. Its semi-annual yield will be 1.03% based on yesterday?s closing price of $7.76. The company has paid a semi-annual dividend since 2008, and each dividend payment has either increased or remained the same from the prior six months.

International Game Technology (NYSE:IGT) yields 1.86% annually and has a market cap of $4.56 billion. The global developer of casino games, gaming equipment, and systems for social gaming and wagering markets will pay a quarterly dividend of $0.08 on April 5, and its quarterly yield will be 0.46% based on yesterday?s closing price of $17.23. The company first paid a quarterly dividend from 1993 through the first quarter of 1999 and resumed paying a quarterly dividend in 2003.

Synovus Financial Corporation (NYSE:SNV) yields 1.42% annually and has a market cap of $2.21 billion. The provider of financial services in the US will pay a quarterly dividend of $0.01 on April 1, and the quarterly yield will be 0.36% based on yesterday?s closing price of $2.81. The company has paid a quarterly dividend since 1990.

These companies also have their ex-dividend date on March 19. All annual yields are estimated.

Apollo Investment Corporation (NASDAQ:AINV) yields 9.12% annually and will pay a quarterly dividend of $0.20 on April 4.

Main Street Capital Corporation (NYSE:MAIN) yields 5.30% annually and will pay a monthly dividend of $0.155 on April 15.

Solar Capital (NASDAQ:SLRC) yields 3.70% annually and will pay a quarterly dividend of $0.60 on April 2.

International Flavors & Fragrances (NYSE:IFF) yields 1.81% annually and will pay a quarterly dividend of $0.34 on April 4.

Total System Services (NYSE:TSS) yields 1.65% annually and will pay a quarterly dividend of $0.10 on April 1.

Purchase -- and have your broker settle -- before the ex-dividend date to secure the dividend.

Three Tips for Growing Blueberries - Articles :: Networx

undefinedThere is a strong case to be made for growing blueberries in a home garden. The bushes are similar in stature to common ornamental bushes, like Rhododendron, but they offer much more of a payoff for the space that they occupy. The benefits of growing blueberry bushes are many: Blueberry bushes provide necessary food for pollinators. Since honeybee populations are on the decline in most of the USA, it is helpful for homeowners to create bee-friendly landscaping in order to bolster local bee populations. Blueberries are extremely nutritious, not to mention tasty. In season for a short time, blueberries tend to be expensive in the markets. Blueberry bushes can provide you with an ample supply of fruit during their growing season, as well as extra to freeze or can for the winter. With a bit of care, you can grow blueberries in your yard, and enjoy the bushes for years to come.

Tip one for growing blueberries: Blueberry bushes require "very acidic soil conditions", according to the Ohio State University Extension Service. Moist, well-drained soil with a pH of between 4.5 and 5.0 is the ideal soil for blueberry bushes. Before planting blueberry bushes, you'll need to have your soil analyzed to find out what its pH is, and which nutrients need to be added to it. Many university extension services offer soil testing services. Since blueberry bushes need soil with a high content of organic matter, you may need to add organic matter (like compost) to the soil. It's hard to know how much fertilizer to add, or how much acidifying agent you'll need to add, without an initial soil analysis. Also, you'll need to maintain the soil throughout the year to ensure optimal growth of your blueberry bushes.

Tip two for growing blueberries: Watering blueberry bushes properly is critical for growth. In order for the the berries to form well, blueberry bushes need plenty of water. You don't want to deprive blueberry bushes of water. You'll need to deliver one to two inches of water per week to your blueberry bushes, even after the harvest during late August and September. Watering the blueberry bushes after the harvest promotes the growth of the following year's crop. In the late fall, once the bush's leaves drop, you can stop providing supplemental water. During the growing season, the best way to water blueberry bushes is with soaker hoses, which deliver water right to the roots of the bushes.

Tip three for growing blueberries: Pruning and mulching your blueberry bushes can help them to live longer, grow bigger, and produce more fruit. We'll start with pruning. For the first three years of growth, blueberry bushes do not need to be pruned. In March of the fourth year of your blueberry bush's growth, it should be pruned. Remove dead branches, dormant branches, and interior cross branches that block light from reaching the interior of the bush. Now, on to mulch: Since blueberry bushes like nutrient-dense, moist soil, mulching is important. You'll need to keep the mulch at a constant two to four inches in depth. Wood chips and peat moss are fine mulches for blueberry bushes.

With a bit of TLC and some initial soil testing, you can nurture blueberry bushes in your own yard. One last tip: If birds are eating up your blueberries, netting the bushes can help to protect them from birds.

Misfit Politics Senator Claire McCaskill: Equal (Read: Extra) Rights ...

So. While liberty-minded individuals were concerned about the president using his domestic drone program to violate the 5th and 14th Amendments, Missouri Senator Democrat Claire McCaskill was fighting to pass legislation that strengthens the laws regarding domestic violence against women.

Wait, say what? Assault is already illegal?

Surely it?s not illegal to hit a woman ? if it were, why would we need further federal legislation? To make it more illegal? How exactly does that work?

McCaskill touts the legislation as a great thing for victims of domestic violence ? the part she leaves out is that the Violence Against Women Act only protects women. (The most recent update to VAWA also includes victims of domestic violence in same sex relationships.)

Wait, are you saying it does nothing for men who are victims of heterosexual domestic abuse?

    Shocking!

Senator McCaskill has made a career for herself crusading for equal rights for women. But if women get preferential treatment in regards to domestic violence, how is that equal?

In promoting the renewal of VAWA, Senator McCaskill reveals her real agenda ? legislating extra rights for women. Because #WaronWomen, right?
